Got to catch Phoenix, Oregon when it screened in SF recently. What a delightful movie. The acting is great, the storyline is heart-felt without being too sentimental, and there are a cast of unexpected characters that are funny and believable. Go see it in theatre or catch it when it comes to Netflix.

The movie offers a believable story, a message that is not trite, and more than a few good laughs along the way. While many holocaust survivors openly express rage and uncontrolled bitterness towards their persecutors, other survivors display only an emotional deadness and a pervasive feeling of being alone and scared. In the movie “Fateless, Gyuri, a young man sent to Buchenwald, moves from a childlike innocence to world-weariness in the span of one year. When he comes home, he feels more alone than he did at the camp and even expresses a sort of homesickness for the camaraderie he felt. As a disfigured Holocaust survivor in Christian Petzold’s “Phoenix, Nina Hoss’ shattered look, repressed emotions, and shaky voice feel so natural that her gradual awakening to life epitomizes a Phoenix rising from the ashes.

This looks like it’s going to be beautiful. Love the music.
Tokyo Godfathers, by Shogo Furuya and Satoshi Kon, is an anime film so content to be mediocre that it is dispiriting to watch. It follows three destitute friends, a man, a transvestite, and a teenage girl, who find a baby on the street and try to take care of it. This alone is cliché and cloying but it only gets worse. The film can’t decide if it wants to be melodramatic or realistic and so is filled with scenes of cornballish plot developments and splotched by serious ones (there is scene where a mobster gets shot in the head. The film is done with too light a touch when it should pound away at the corniness and is too corny when it should earn our respect. So many critics have forgiven the films lukewarm impact for its humanism. I am all for humanism, but I must say that the jarring stereotypes of transvestites (the transvestite character is made to look like freak) make me a little reluctant to praise this humanism critics speak of. I suppose the only real reason to catch this film is its radically weird style, with an awesome chase scene fueled by tacky music that sounds like its from a Sega ‘Mario Brothers’ game and ending with a shot of a dancing tower.
This is the first anime I ever watched in sub.
Love this movie, I watched it with friends at the lecture hall we booked at night and lots of wtfs shouts at the background, if you got friends watch it together its more awesome that way.

Tokyo Godfathers is still the only Christmas film I’ve seen that I think adequately captures Christian pathos and the ethics in light of the challenges it faces in the modern world. If Jesus were alive today society would probably push him to the fringes to be among these three outsiders.
There are 2 directors that had to be in this list. The first one is, no doubt, Mamoru Oshii. After Hayao Misyazaki, Oshii is the most well known Japanese animation movie director, most known, not only by the series Ghost in The Shell, but also by the Patlabor movie trilogy. It’s semi-realistic character design, combined with an unique style of animation makes his works true masterpieces, at the sme level at Miyazaki. The second director is Shinji Aramaki. I think Aramaki should be in this list, not beacuse of what he has done (decades ago) but what he has been doing in recent years, and how it can affect the future of Japanese Animation. For those who don’t know, Shinji Aramaki is the guy who proved that Anime didn’t have to be restricted to 2D animation and was able to do the most successfull 3D/CGI Anime movies/series ever done. From 2004’s Appleseed, to 2019’s Ultraman series, to the new CGI Starship Troopers films (as director) almost every Japanese 3D animation film has (at least) his participation. That’s why Aramaki had to be in that list. While Miyazaki and Oshii represent the past, Aramaki represents the future of Japanese Animation, by breaking a barrier betwen conventional (or CGI Assisted) 2D animation an actual 3D Animation, in Japan.

This anime made me cry at night.
This reminds quite a bit of a Vocaloid song sung by Gumi, called A Fake, Fake, Psychotropic. :0 It’s about a girl being angry of never getting enough done, wishing there were more of her. She suddenly gets her wish and her doubleganger starts doing all the annoying work for her. At first she is really euphoric about that. This copy of her that does everything more perfectly than she does. She works better and is more popular and the girl enjoys that her reputations go up without her having to put work into it herself. But everything goes downhill when she realises that this fake copy of hers is suddenly perfectly taking on so many parts of her life (work, social interactions etc. that she herself is not living it anymore. She got replaced by a copy of herself, with which she cannot keep up, neither socially, nor in the quality of her work. I see quite a lot of parallels here.

At first glance, I wasn’t sure if I would like this movie. The “miracles DO happen on Christmas” cliché is very boring and I typically don’t enjoy movies that employ it, but this is a very different kind of Christmas movie.
We are given three homeless characters with complex personalities and backgrounds, who are as endearing as they are repellent. They take up the task of caring for a baby they found in the trash, and trying to bring it back to its mother. We learn the secrets that made these people homeless, we learn about the workings of human shame and desperation, and we learn that “miracles DO happen on Christmas.” But in the least cheesy way possible!
The plot is very slow-moving, but still, it is interesting and very carefully laid out. This would be a very compelling live-action movie, but the use of animation adds so much visual interest, particularly the expressive (and sometimes hideous. face of Hana, the gangly transvestite. The choice of music is unique and very fitting: the song played during a walking-around-the-city montage is reminiscent of Clockwork Orange.
Interesting and careful story, complex and realistic story, tremendous visual appeal and excellent music. I guess this movie pretty much has it all.

Storyline
A story of love and understanding set amidst the tensions and uncertainties of the days immediately following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. Albert Yeung’s father, Mr Yeung Shing, opened a watch shop named “Shing On Kee Watch Shop” in 1942, setting the business foundation. [1] Six companies within the Group are listed on the Main Board of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. These include Emperor International Holdings Limited (Stock code: 163), which focuses on real estate investment and property development; Emperor Watch and Jewellery Limited (Stock code: 887), which specializes in the retail of luxury watches and fine jewellery; Emperor Entertainment Hotel Limited (Stock code: 296), which concentrates on hotel and gaming businesses in Macau; Emperor Capital Group Limited (Stock code: 717), which provides a wide range of financial services; and Emperor Culture Group Limited ( Stock code: 491), which principally engages in entertainment, media and cultural development business; and Ulferts International Limited (Stock code: 1711), which is engaged in chain retailing of upmarket European furniture.

As of 1989, the Emperor Group’s investments included a printing service, investment and property holdings, the wholesale and retailing of furniture, infoline and money-lending services, securities and future brokerage services, entertainment, laser disc and video rental, and the supply of equipment for the pager business and Taiwan and mainland China. In 1992, it acquired 30% of the shares of the Hong Kong Daily News [ zh] ( Chinese: 新報; literally: ‘new newspaper’). [2]

Watches and Jewellery [ edit]
Emperor Watch & Jewellery Limited ( SEHK: 887) was founded in 1942 by Yeung Shing. The company is a retailer of timepieces and a manufacturer of jewellery. [5] On 22 March 2011, the firm announced its 2010 annual results, reporting revenue of approximately HK$4, 095 million, an increase of 52. 5%. [6]

Real estate investment and property development of Emperor Group are mainly managed byEmperor International Holdings Limited ( SEHK: 163). Formally established in 1990, its operations were originally limited to Hong Kong. From 2005, the group began to acquire a number of properties in Macao. Beginning in 2006, the group has engaged in property development projects in Beijing. As of February 2011, the total value of the group’s properties was HK$20 billion. In Hong Kong, the group has become the second largest landlord of ground-floor shop spaces on Russell Street in Causeway Bay where retail rents have risen to become the second highest in the world, ranking only below that of Fifth Avenue in New York. Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) was established in 1999. Its major businesses include production and distribution of local and foreign records, music publishing, talent management and concert production. The company is also engaged in theater, film and TV production, multimedia and merchandise licensing, retail and other businesses. [8] Emperor Motion Pictures ( Chinese: 英皇電影 [9] known as EMP) is a film producer and distributor, part of the Emperor Group.
Hospitality [ edit]
Opened in 2006, Grand Emperor Hotel is located in Macau and offers dining, accommodations as well as gaming and entertainment facilities. It is managed by Emperor Entertainment Hotel Limited ( SEHK: 296), [10] a gaming business of its parent company Emperor International Holdings Limited.
Media [ edit]
New Media Group principally engages in magazine publishing and distribution, as well as in providing a marketing platform through advertising spaces to clients. Its flagship titles include Oriental Sunday, Weekend Weekly, NM+ New Monday and Economic Digest. The Group has actively developed its digital business in recent years and transformed into a multimedia platform. The group also owns a printing house named Hong Kong Daily Offset Printing to support the printing of the books and magazines. [11]

Established in 1975, Ulferts is a furniture chain store in Hong Kong dealing in European brand furniture. In 1979, the firm started the production and sales of its proprietary mattress products under the “Ulfenbo” brand name. [12]

The Group owns a diversity of restaurants, including Golden Valley, Michelin Star winner of 7 consecutive years since 2011, as well as sassy leisure outlets, dragon-i and TAZMANIA BALLROOM. [13]

EES owns three professional eSports teams – G-REX (PUBG), G-REX Infinite (PUBG) and G-REX (LOL). Hong Kong’s first professional, world champion League of Legends player Toyz, joined EES as Chief Team Manager. [14]
Co-working space [ edit]
Emperor Group’s first co-working space, Mustard Seed, is located at Emperor Group Centre, Wan Chai, providing young entrepreneurs with resources, partnership opportunities, community affiliations as well as leasing options at a concessionary rent no higher than half of the market rental. The project has participated in the “Space Sharing Scheme for Youth” to support start-ups and young entrepreneurs. [15]

Liang Cheng KCMG KCVO, November 30, 1864 – February 3, 1917 [1]), courtesy name Liang Chentung, also known as Liang Pi Yuk, and later as Chentung Liang Cheng, was a Chinese ambassador to the United States during the Qing dynasty. He was primarily responsible for negotiating the return payment by the US of its share of the Boxer Indemnity for the establishment of Tsinghua University and the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program.
Early life in the United States [ edit]

Liang was born in Panyu, Guangdong Province. At the age of 12, he was sent to study in the United States as part of the Chinese Educational Mission. He studied at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, but returned to China in 1881 when the program was canceled. [2]
One of the reasons for the cancellation of the mission was that the students were adopting too many American customs, and Liang was no exception. While at Phillips, he became a star baseball player for the school, most famously in a game against Phillips Exeter Academy in 1881, where he batted in three runs with two extra base hits. [3]
Diplomatic career [ edit]
Early career [ edit]
After returning to China, Liang joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Beginning in 1885, he followed Zhang Yinhuan and served in the Chinese embassy to the United States, Spain, and Peru (one embassy served all three countries). He, along with Zhang, also participated in the negotiations for the Treaty of Shimonoseki, following China’s defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War. [2]
In 1897, again as part of Zhang’s legation, he was in London for Queen Victoria ‘s Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary of her coronation), and was named an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George. It was at this time that he placed his courtesy name ahead of his given name and became knighted as Sir Chentung Liang Cheng. [3]
During the Boxer Rebellion, Liang accompanied Prince Chun to Germany where the latter was to personally apologize to Kaiser Wilhelm II for the murder of Baron Clemens von Ketteler. [2] The Kaiser wanted to have the Prince kowtow before him as a form of humiliation, but Liang was able to negotiate a compromise and the Prince merely bowed before the Kaiser in a private audience. [1]
Ambassador to the United States [ edit]
On July 19, 1902, Liang was appointed the Chinese ambassador to the United States, Spain, and Peru (this later was changed to ambassador to the United States and Mexico, and in late 1903, to just the United States [1]), replacing Wu Tingfang. Shortly after assuming his post, Liang met with President Theodore Roosevelt, who asked him about his Phillips Academy days. As the story goes, Roosevelt asked who Liang thought was the best player on the team. Forgoing the usual Chinese cultural habit of modesty, Liang replied that he was. “From that moment the relations between President Roosevelt and myself became ten-fold stronger and closer, ” said Liang. [3]
The Boxer Protocol signed at the conclusion of the Boxer Rebellion specified that China was to pay war reparations to the Eight-Nation Alliance in silver, but seven of the countries demanded payment in gold instead. The United States was amenable to silver, but changed its mind in order to preserve unanimity with the rest of the alliance. During those discussions in early 1905, US Secretary of State John Hay had mentioned to Liang that he felt the amount of the indemnity to be paid was too high, and Liang saw an opportunity to have the US return some of that money. Negotiations were initially successful, except that China did not want to reveal what it would do with the returned funds. The US was wary of political corruption and demanded that the funds would be used in “establishing educational institutions and financing foreign study”. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuan Shikai put forth a counter-proposal that would allocate the money to building roads instead, but the Qing government did not want to present it for fear that the US would want to “interfere out of suspicion” later. [2]
However, the refund of the indemnity did not take place until two years later. Various hurdles, such as Hay’s death, mistreatment of Chinese Americans, and the killing of the missionary Eleanor Chestnut in Lianzhou, all caused delays. Furthermore, public opinion in the US was against refunding, and Hay’s successor Elihu Root, despite previously being “sympathetic” toward China, now reversed course. [2]
Liang decided to approach Commerce Secretary Oscar S. Straus and Secretary of the Interior James Rudolph Garfield. In April 1907 those two then asked Roosevelt to recheck the actual expenditures of the US Army in China. Thanks to Liang’s friendly relationship with Roosevelt, the President agreed to the request. Meanwhile, Yuan had learned that his counter-proposal was never put forth to the US, and as a result, was displeased with Liang who had initiated and advocated the use of the funds towards education. In April or May, the Foreign Ministry recalled Liang to Beijing, but Liang was able to forestall this from happening. Finally on June 15, Liang was informed that the US would indeed repay a portion of its share of the indemnity (this was later increased to 50% of the final payment, and eventually in 1924 to 100%). His negotiations concluded, Liang returned to China; his replacement was the man he succeeded, Wu Tingfang. [2]
The monies that Liang negotiated were used to establish Tsinghua University in Beijing and to fund the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program.
Later career [ edit]
Upon his return to China, he served as the director of the Guangdong–Hankou Railway, President of the Board of Foreign Affairs, and Comptroller General of Maritime Customs at Beijing. In 1909, he accompanied Prince Rui as a member of the Chinese Imperial Naval Commission to study the navies of western nations. In 1910–11, he became the Chinese Minister to Berlin, and during that time was conferred the Order of the Red Eagle, 1st Class. His final assignment was as China’s representative to the International Opium Convention at The Hague in 1912. When the Qing dynasty fell, he retired to Huangpu village in Guangdong, and then later to Hong Kong, where he died in 1917. [1]

Liang was married three times to women whose names are not recorded, except that one had the surname Huang (黄). [1] His first wife died before he became the ambassador to the United States, and bore him six children. [4] From his second marriage, he had another son, for a total of seven children. [1]

When I first watched the film, I thought the pacing was way too quick for me to actually understand what was going on. Although I will say that the fire fighter scenes were pretty intense regardless if they were only training or had to attend buildings that were on fire due to fireworks.
I understood this films backdrop involving the feeling of losing someone through drowning and honestly the ending was a near hard hitter for me. However I would have liked if the couples experience together was more in depth because as I said yet again, it was rather rushed. It didn’t give much in depth either with the other guy who had a crush on her or if he was going for someone else. Since I’m not gonna say spoilers to telling you who’s who, it’s best to watch the film.
Animation wise, it was pretty alright. Not amazeballs but it was easy on the eyes at least.
As much as the film did offer a bit of emotion, it’s not the ultimate worse or disappointment I’ve ever seen. However room for improvement is what it definitely definitely needs in terms of story pace development.

Thank god the script writer avoids all the common cliche from a Japanese anime. It’s a sincere and touching story, worth the time.
Hinako is a surfer, Minato is a firefighter. Both about 20 and they fall in love. Everything is ridiculously perfect, but one day Minato drowns while trying to save someone from the ocean.
Hinako, understandably takes it pretty bad, but to her surprise, whenever she starts singing their favorite song, Minato’s spirit appears in the closest body of water – be it a stream, the ocean, or a bottle of mineral water.
The whole story is really about Hinako, Minato’s friends and family, and how they slowly but finally learn to “let go.
Of course, it’s magical-realism, so in the end we get to witness some crazy action as well, where we surf down a skyscraper with our protagonists.
Unfortunately, this is not the most original story, the characters are a little two dimensional, and the filmmaking could’ve been a little braver.
It’s fine though, the film looks really nice, colorful with constantly glowing orange hues and cool blues. The action looks fantastic as well and the environments feel very “lived in” and detailed. Seeing it on a big screen really adds to the experience.
It is also paced well, has some pretty funny moments, as well as a couple of quite moving ones.
Recommended if you manage to catch it screening somewhere, but not an essential viewing.

Gene Autry – Can’t Keep a Job, Makes a “C” Western
Gene Autry in another “C” western that would have been marginally better than the others I’ve seen because there’s a lot less music, but suffers from having too much idiot comedy from both Smiley Burnette and Max Terhune. The plot has two themes that wind up intertwined – first the Texas Rangers are disbanded and Autry and Terhune commissioned with the U. S. Cavalry and all his men join him – then Autry gets arrested and before getting shot escapes and all his men join him. Autry goes to the Governor and gets the Rangers re-formed and all his men join him. Why all this back and forth – a renegade Indian has the Cavalry Colonel befuddled and his blinkered of circumstances and Indians is a problem. Of course Gene is right and it all gets sorted out as Indians attack a wagon train and Autry brings the Cavalry and Rangers in for protection. Terhune is grossly hick and in the spirit of the day, virulently anti-Indian; Burnette is just dumb and has a running joke in which an Indian keeps trying to scalp him – Ugh! Kay Hughes – Autry’s love at first sight cutie – has little to do but look pretty and they marry at the end. IMDb says between 1933-45 she appeared in 28 films before retiring. IMDb says its 63:00, but we get 53:00 here. A few fights and the final battle provide the little action available – otherwise there’s a little talk, s little riding and a few changes of jail. You can’t trust the Rangers, you can’t trust the Cavalry, you can’t trust the Indians – but you can always trust Gene Autry. Ho Hum and Ugh!

Gene Autry Rides Again
In the 1930s the big draw for movie goers was to see the stars they’d been listening to over the radio.
Gene Autry was big box office until WWII. While he served his country, his on screen boots were filled by Roy Rogers.
Fairly uneven script for this film. Burnett and Terhune are clearly vying for screen time but they work well together to provide comic relief.

Smiley Burnette and Max Terhune
Max Terhune, who plays Rufe in the film, had worked with Gene Autry at WLS in Chicago. Terhune had come out to Hollywood in hopes that Autry could get him a job in films. Terhune had been a rube comedian, specializing in barnyard noises and slapstick. After his appearance in the film, he was approached by Smiley Burnette, who also had worked with Autry on the road and now was his steady sidekick. Burnette reportedly told him that while he (Terhune) might have a career in films, it would not be in Autry’s films as there was already an official sidekick. Terhune found steady employment as a comic ventriloquist in Republic’s Three Mesquiteer films.

Entertaining if you’re not looking for intellectual
This is one of my favorite B westerns. It’s light-hearted, lots of action and politically incorrect. For what it’s worth, I’m part Shawnee, and my favorite thing about this film is that throughout its length, an Indian chases one of the characters about for the purpose of scalping him. This movie is just short of Mel Brooks (except I couldn’t stand ‘Blazing Saddles’).

Good Gene Autry Western
A better than average Gene Autry western that was produced at the beginning of his movie career when his movies features a lot of action and not so many songs to stop the plot cold. Smiley Burnette and Max Terhune play well off each other as sidekicks. Check it out, if you like “B” westerns. There are worse ways to spend an hour.

Gee, what was that song again?
Fairly tame Gene Autry vehicle (as if there were any hard-hitting, serious-minded ones) that deals with Autry and his pals getting jobs with the Texas Rangers, In this we realize a number of things.. we see that the rangers are trigger-happy when it comes to arresting Autry (and rehiring people on the spot), it shows how to to do the old flattened metal dish to block doorways from being locked, how people are around handily to turn tables over when thereÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs a fight, and how the Indians, while using their ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂMan go that wayÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ type of talk, also use sign language to get their point across. This is a rather curious movie, that teaches us that the Texas Rangers are not to be trusted, has an EXTREMELY lame love interest, and how they are able to get a song in our head by repeating it 3 times. Yikes!

Back in a saturday afternoon, children went to the movies and this is one of the films that would be screened. It was usually the only time that they would see a film. In the evening the film would be shown to adults as a second feature and often it would be found more enjoyable than the much more expensive main film.
Drake was a legend back then.

In its depiction of the life of an Austrian farmer who refused to sign an oath of loyalty to Hitler or to fight in an unjust war, Terrence Malick’s ( Song to Song” nearly three-hour film, A Hidden Life, reminds us of the power of moral and spiritual commitment. Based on the exchange of letters between Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl, The Young Karl Marx. and his wife Fani (Valerie Pachner, The Ground Beneath My Feet. it is a sublime portrait of a man compelled to call upon his last reservoir of strength to maintain his commitment, knowing that his act of conscience will do nothing to stop the war and will put his family and his own life at risk.
The film opens in 1939 in the village of St. Radegund in Austria where Franz lives a simple life with his wife and their three daughters. Devout Catholics, they live in a close-knit community, gathering in the local pub on Saturday nights and in church on Sunday mornings. In the rich poetic style Malick is known for, we see fields of grain, pristine flowing streams, awe-inspiring mountain vistas, and children running and playing, as gorgeously photographed by cinematographer Jörg Widmer ( The Invisibles” and enhanced by the music of James Newton Howard ( Red Sparrow. To remind us of the context, we view grainy newsreel footage of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938, an event that foreshadowed the start of World War II less than two years later.
It is clear to Jägerstätter that every able-bodied Austrian man will be forced to sign an oath pledging their allegiance to the Führer but Franz, whose father fought and died in World War I, asks Fani, Oh my wife, what has become of our country? In 1940, Jägerstätter is conscripted into the Wehrmacht, but is twice sent home on the grounds of his “reserved civilian occupation” as a farmer. He refuses to obey a third order, however, recalling a dream in which he saw a train carrying hundreds of Hitler Youth to their death as a warning of the evil of Nazism. In his writing Jägerstätter says that, for him, to fight and kill people so that the godless Nazi regime could conquer and enslave ever more of the world’s peoples would mean becoming personally guilty.”
Since a referendum was held on April 10, 1938 in which an astonishing 99.73 percent of Austrians voted in favor of joining the Third Reich, it is not surprising that Franz receives little support from his neighbors or from the local priest (Tobias Moretti, Cold Hell. A religious man, Franz turns to the Diocesan Bishop of Linz, Joseph Calasanz Fliesser (Michael Nyqvist, Frank & Lola” for support but is told by the Bishop that it is not his task to decide whether the war was righteous or unrighteous. In a powerful scene, a man (Johan Leysen, Claire Darling” who paints murals of a happy Christ on a church ceiling laments the fear that has kept him from painting Jesus’ suffering on the cross.
In prison, Malick captures Jägerstätter’s humanity when he helps a prisoner get up from the ground after a beating and when he sneaks an extra slice of bread to a hungry prisoner. When one of Franz’ final judges played by the late Bruno Ganz ( Amnesia” suggests that the prisoner’s principles will change nothing and that if he signs the oath he will go free, Franz smiles and says that he is already free. Though his mother, friends, and relatives try to change his mind, only Fani stands by him saying, If I hadn’t stood by him, he wouldn’t have had anyone at all.” It is only later when he is in a Berlin prison, condemned to die as a traitor, that she begs him to sign a loyalty oath.
Malick’s point of view, however, is clear and unmistakable as stated in the quote from author George Eliot shown in the film:
“For the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”
54 years later, on May 7, 1997, Jägerstätter verdict was annulled by the District Court of Berlin and his martyrdom was officially confirmed by the Vatican ten years later. His beatification took place in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Linz in October, 2007 and he is now referred to as Blessed Franz Jägerstätter. How many people in power today who face the same accounting will be remembered for their acts of conscience.

The old admiral was right, he spoke out of turn. There was a collision with a U.S. attack sub. The U.S. sub was damaged and fired a torpedo which hit the control bridge. This movie is good, but fiction. This incident almost caused WW3, Clinton and Putin let cooler heads prevail… this is a state secret on both sides.
